Banana Cue is what we call fried skewered plantains cooked in caramelized brown sugar here in the Philippines. It is honestly a popular snack or merienda here in the country. You could ask every Filipino here in the Philippines and they most probably got a taste of Banana Cue at some point in their lives, one way or another – that is how well-known Banan Cue is.

Mostly consumed as a mid-afternoon snack, Banana Cue can also be a delightful dessert to have right after a savory meal. Its sweetness is absolutely undeniable as it is literally banana covered in sugar. If you want or need some kind of sugar rush, then you better munch on a bunch of this now, because we are telling you, you will undenialy be feeling some buzz after – as if you can take on the world or something. Kidding!

You might be wondering why it is called what it is called, and so let us explain it to you. Banana Cue or Bananacue got its name as it is a play between banana and barbecue. If you are not familiar with barbecue, then do know that it has a similar concept to a kebab, but barbecue is pork cuts in a stick. Hence with Banana Cue, they are deep fried bananas coated in caramelized brown sugar on a stick which really makes it a fun and convenient eat. You could be walking in the park and enjoying a Banana Cue at the same time, without any hassle.

By the way, the bananas are not cooked on stick like barbecue, though. You first have to deep fry the bananas, add the brown sugar after a few minutes, and then continue to gently stir them so each banana piece can be beautifully coated with that melted brown sugar that is just downright heavenly. After frying and coating them, that is the time you put a skewer into them. Two banana pieces are usually placed in one skewer so as for you to be able to have space for holding it. Just let it rest and cool for a while and then you can start munching on them already. A glass of cold drinks usually is a good pairing with this, making your snacking time even more fun and refreshing!
