Most of us are used to the typical bar setting of stools, bar counter and endless beers, wines and liquors on display. You will most definitely not find these at Spiffy’s Grove Cider Bar – The Philippines’ First and Only Cider Bar. The name – Spiffy’s Grove was derived from one of the owner’s usual hang-out joint abroad.
With their menu on the wall, hand written and very much noticeable, the owner really, is a resourceful one.
Their garden setting is undeniably so cool and cozy to look at. A lot of their regulars enjoy the warmth and comfy feel of the place. One can easily relax, grab a beer and chill out with friends at one of their colorful inflated seats.
Assisted and entertained by Gladys, the owner who used to be a part of the corporate world and decided to pursue managing her business venture instead is a very accommodating and friendly gal.
Gladys wanted to introduced Ciders to the Philippines as she believes that it goes well with the Filipino palate.
Surely, we couldn’t just keep drinking beers without food right? Gladys made us try their house made Jaffles. But what exactly is a Jaffle, one might ask? A jaffle is a toasted sandwich traditionally made in a jaffle iron – a type of closed metal skillet.
The jaffle sandwich is sealed around the edges making the sandwich ingredients deliciously cooked and melted.
We sampled first their Spaghetti Bolognese Jaffle which is basically the dish – Spaghetti Bolognese inside the toasted sandwich. It may sound plain and simple but pair it with your favorite Cider beer and its a perfect match.
But since I’m obviously a sucker for anything sweet, I absolutely enjoyed their Banana and Nutella in Cinnamon Toast Jaffle. Combining Banana and Nutella was a very bright idea, then you add a little bit of cinnamon and boom you’ve got a delectable and yummy sandwich.
We also tried their Creamy Chicken Pesto Dumpling which I must say is certainly not your ordinary dumpling. Imagine having your chicken pesto in the bite size dumplings but still with the creamy and scrumptious taste that we all love in a pesto.
Next time, we’ll be at the area, we will definitely make sure to grab a bottle or two at Spiffy’s Grove, after all, they’re the only Cider Bar in the metro.
