Tuna Adlai Fried Rice ala Yang Chow Recipe

We no longer know how many times we have told you this, but we will tell it to you again – we love rice. It is possible that it may be a Filipino thing, but our meals will not be complete if there is no rice on the table. That said, what we have for you today is a recipe that uses rice as a main ingredient since rice is usually more of a side in our culture.

White Rice is the one we have grown up with and if you have caught our previous rice recipes, you will also notice that the type of rice we used to make them was white rice. Want to better see what we mean? You can check out our Adobo Fried Rice, Tocino Fried RIce, and Corned Beef Fried Rice recipes to get a good grasp of what we are talking about.

Anyway, since we have noticed that we have used white rice in most of our rice recipes, we have decided to switch things up this time by using Adlai rice. Also known as “Chinese Pearl Barley” or “Job’s Tears”, Adlai is a tall-grain plant primarily grown in tropical areas such as the Philippines. True enough, Adlai rice is extensively cultivated in Northern Mindanao as well as in selected areas in Cordillera region. Aside from that, Adlai looks and tastes like rice, but its flavor profile is more on the nutty side; and once cooked, Adlai is softer in texture and more compact, with a slightly chewy texture. People also say that Adlai rice is a healthier alternative to white rice so people who are going for a healthier lifestyle often reach for Adlai.

With all that Adlai information in mind, plus our goal to play things up, we have decided to use Adlai Rice in making our Tuna Adlai Fried Rice ala Yang Chow recipe. Yang Chow is actually a well-known Asian dish, a type of fried rice made in a wok, and its ingredients are usually a mix of rice, eggs, peas, carrots, together with some sort of meat. There are a lot of Yang Chow variants out there but we have always loved the ones we had hence here we are trying our own hand at it.

Besides Adlai, our Tuna Adlai Fried Rice ala Yang Chow includes onion, garlic, red bell pepper, carrot, egg, green onions, sesame seeds, and Chinese sausage. To make it even more flavorful, we have picked up Dona Elena Pure Olive Oil and Dona Elena Tuna Chunks in Sunflower Oil which we also both included in the making of this recipe. Indeed, Dona Elena is a trusted brand of ours as they are a world-class Filipino household brand. Their flagship product is their Olive Oil so we made sure to snatch one up when we were in the grocery; and then their Tuna Chunks in Sunflower also caught our attention so we did not pass up the opportunity to try it out as well. Spoiler alert: Our expectations were not just met, but even exceeded.

All that being said, we suggest you start gathering everything you need to make this Tuna Adlai Fried Rice ala Yang Chow recipe of ours too because we promise you, it’s just so good – flavorful, filling, and definitely great regardless if you are to have it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even as a heavy snack.
